Today we were told of the loss of a national treasure, Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison. When I was a teenager, I her novel, "The Bluest Eye." It is the gut-wrenching story of a young Black girl obsessively wanting to be white so she could be beautiful and loved. After that literary experience, I hungered for more Morrison, her works and her life story. She was a single mother willing to share her gifts and herself with the world. She led a profound life, well-read and well-lived. Today I give you one of my favorite Morrison quotes: "If you want to fly, you must give up the things that weigh you down." To have the things you desire, To grow into who you want to be, To live the inspired life you were meant to live, Let go of the things (and people) that are deadweight and slow you down. Your newfound freedom will take you to new heights. To Your Next Flight!
